NO REPRO FEE Shelbourne 200th 3.jpg
21/03/2024 Dublin, Ireland. Celebrating the 200th Birthday of The Shelbourne: Management and staff at The Shelbourne Dublin lined up around the original grand staircase as the hotel gets set to mark two centuries in business. Founded in 1824, the Grande Dame of Dublin Hotels has been the natural centre of political, cultural and social life for two hundred years. Home to some truly historic moments, including the drafting on the Irish Constitution in 1922, the hotel was the first in Ireland to be lit by gaslight in 1825. Famous faces who have visited The Shelbourne over the years include John F. Kennedy, Hollywood stars Grace Kelly, Maureen O'Hara, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin and Paul Newman. The famous Horseshoe Bar was the legendary watering hole of many of Ireland's most distinguished authors, poets, and playwrights, including Brendan Behan, Brian Friel, Seamus Heaney and many more. Musicians have congregated here too, including icons as varied as The Rolling Stones and Luciano Pavarotti. The Shelbourne is planning a year of celebrations and storytelling, looking back on the extraordinary characters and unforgettable events that have shaped The Shelbourne’s story over the last two hundred years.
